The Serra do Curral in Minas Gerais is a significant cultural heritage site, representing historical, touristic, scenic, and cultural value for the region of Belo Horizonte. Despite being recognized and protected at the municipal and national levels, a state-level protection process was halted due to the authorization of a mining complex within the Serra by the State Council of Environmental Policy. Mining in the Serra do Curral will have negative consequences for the environment, including habitat degradation, pollution in springs, and the extinction of species. This authorization highlights a lack of diligence from the responsible authorities. This article aims to discuss the irresponsible mining concession in the Serra do Curral, emphasizing the need for careful consideration of environmental and cultural impacts before granting permissions. It is crucial to assess the long-term consequences on biodiversity, ecosystems, and the cultural identity of the region. Civil society, environmental organizations, and government bodies must engage in the defense and protection of the Serra do Curral and similar sites. Raising awareness and demanding more effective public policies are essential to ensure a sustainable future. It is urgent to review the decisions made concerning the Serra do Curral, taking into account the irreversible damage mining can cause to the environment and cultural heritage. Protecting these assets is a collective responsibility that requires action from competent authorities and active participation from society to preserve these natural and cultural treasures for present and future generations. For this, the systemic theoretical and deductive approach methods were employed, along with a bibliographic and documentary research on the topic.
