an analysis of the impact on oral health

Eating disorders are psychiatric conditions that affect eating behavior and body perception, with a direct impact on systemic and oral health. This study aims to analyze, through a literature review, the main oral manifestations associated with anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, and binge eating disorder, highlighting both infectious and non-infectious diseases, as well as the role of the dentist in early diagnosis and management of these patients. The most common oral changes include dental erosion, xerostomia, hypersensitivity, dental caries, fungal and bacterial infections, in addition to salivary gland enlargement. The presence of these manifestations is often related to purging behaviors, nutritional deficiencies, and the use of psychotropic medications. The findings reinforce the importance of the dentist’s role in the early identification of these conditions and the adoption of preventive and restorative strategies. Therefore, a dental approach integrated with a multidisciplinary team is essential to ensure the promotion of oral health and the humanized care of these patients.
