Abstract

The increasing prevalence of mental disorders represents a significant challenge for public health systems, directly impacting various areas of healthcare, including dentistry. Conditions such as depression, anxiety, schizophrenia, eating disorders, and bipolar disorder affect not only the emotional well-being of individuals but also their ability to maintain proper oral hygiene and adhere to dental treatments. This study aimed to understand the clinical and social implications of dental care for patients with mental disorders. The methodology included a literature review and a field study involving a questionnaire answered by 31 dental surgeons from Belo Horizonte and its metropolitan region. Results showed that 65% of professionals feel unprepared to deal with patients with mental disorders, 86.7% use accessible language as a care strategy, and 56.7% already collaborate with mental health professionals. The findings reveal gaps in academic training and highlight the urgent need for interdisciplinary education. It is concluded that adopting more humanized approaches and implementing public policies focused on mental health are essential to ensure effective and inclusive dental care.
