Abstract

Oral rehabilitation using dental implants was a major breakthrough for dentistry. Until then, rehabilitative treatments to compensate for the loss of one or more missing elements were either through the use of total or partial prostheses or the solution was to resort to the use of fixed bridges. Through his research and tests carried out in laboratories, Branemark left a legacy for dentistry. Implant dentistry is a rehabilitative surgical procedure in which a titanium pin is inserted into the bone, which undergoes an osseointegration process in order to receive a single prosthesis or protocol. There are some systemic conditions that the patient may present that can be a hindrance to the procedure. Diabetes can be a contraindication, taking into account that diabetes alters the osseointegration process, compromising the anchorage of the titanium pin in the bone, as well as compromising the immune system, making the patient more susceptible to infections. For this reason, a detailed anamnesis is essential.
