Lower alveolar nerve paresthesia after third molar extraction

Abstract

Paresthesia is a nerve injury characterized by the loss of sensitivity of the affected nerve, causing great discomfort to the patient. This is a common complication resulting from the extraction of third molars, which in turn is a routine procedure in the dental office. The objective of this study demonstrates, through a literature review, establishing an overview of several related scientific publications. The Scielo, Lilacs, PubMed, BVS databases were consulted. Numbness in the innervated region of the specific nerve occurs due to damage to the sensory nerves, resulting in symptoms: lack of sensitivity, altered sensitivity to cold and heat, pain, sensation of numbness, tingling, itching and itching. According to the findings, the cause is established by injection of anesthetics, wisdom teeth surgery, installation of implants and endodontic therapies. The main therapies involve the application of laser therapy, acupuncture, medications, removal of secondary causes and microneurosurgery. Prevention, early diagnosis and appropriate management are crucial to optimize clinical results and minimize the impact on the patient's quality of life. Therefore, the dentist must maintain transparency and dialogue with the patient, clearly informing them about possible risks and the real need to carry out the procedure.
