Abstract

Can psychological stress modulate periodontal health status? Is there any association between this psychological condition and periodontal disease? Periodontitis is a chronic disease that affects the supporting tissues of the teeth, while stress refers to the emotional and physiological reactions experienced when a person faces an event in life. This article carried out a literature review on the relationship between psychological stress and periodontal disease, evaluating the psychophysiological condition of stress with the cellular response, the etiology of periodontal disease and the evolution of therapy. The work methodology consisted of a scientific search in virtual databases such as Pub Med and Embase. In this context, through a narrative synthesis, it was identified that the literature classifies stress as a cofactor for periodontal disease, with its diagnosis being important for interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary treatment, covering psychology and dentistry, with the aim of achieving successful treatment periodontal therapy.
