Abstract

This work aimed to present a literature review about
special needs in dentistry and strategies to improve oral health in
people with disabilities and special needs. An analysis was
carried out on the factors that influence the oral health of these
patients and the challenges that dental professionals face when
assisting them. Strategies were presented to improve dental care
for PCD, such as establishing a relationship of trust between the
professional and the patient, adapting dental equipment, using
physical and chemical containment resources, among others. It
was concluded that the lack of knowledge and preparation of
professionals, combined with the scarcity of dental services
aimed at these patients, are factors that hinder access to dental
treatment. Therefore, it is essential that there is a greater
awareness, training and guidance for dental professionals, so
that patient management and care are carried out in a qualified
and safe manner and and that more specialized oral health
services are created for this vulnerable population.
