Abstract

Based on my work as a teacher in higher education, I will focus on this research the con tributions of reading practices in the context of professional training, focusing on the deepening of the reflections concerning the relevance of academic literacy in the configuration of professio nal identity. To do so, I will initially seek to contextualize, in a brief way, the study of literacy, or rather, literacy today, and then reflect on the role of knowledge of textual genres and discursive domains to understand the possible difficulties faced by students in appropriation of reading in university. Our intention is to understand the relationships that undergraduates establish with rea ding in Portuguese throughout the course, as well as the consequences and implications of these relationships for their knowledge and the constitution of their professional identities, since, during training, the biggest challenge is to train citizens who are more reflective of their role as readers and producers of texts before a society where reading and writing are often not incorporated as everyday practices.
